Data citations: versions and granularity

On 3 December 2012, the British Library ran a DataCite workshop entitiled 'What to cite: Versioning and granularity of research data for effective citation'. I went along to hear how data centres, institutional data archives, publishers and researchers are making different versions of data available for citation, and their attitudes towards how DOIs are assigned to data.

Oily big data at Online Information 2012

A summary of the Online Information Conference  20th November to 21st November held at Victoria Park Plaza Hotel. Presentations were clustered around 5 key topics which ran in three parallel tracks: the multi-platform, multi device world; social collaboration; big data; search; and new frontiers in information management.

TMTOWTDI: Three data repository experiences in UK HE

Three data repository experiences at UK Higher Educational institutions: A report on parallel session 2B on data repositories and storage (group 1) at the JISC Managing Research Data Meeting in Nottingham, 24 October 2012. This session on data repositories and storage considered the repository systems that support storing, depositing and exposing data at three universities. We heard from the University of Hull, the University of Hertfordshire and the University of Lincoln, where repository systems have been set up or extended through funded projects. Three different solutions were described, each fitting a different approach taken by the institution. The examples illustrated the diversity of systems available and how they fit different needs. The presentations considered a variety of repository features that make them one of the cogs in the institutional research data management machinery.

BRISSKit: Connecting researchers with clinical data

As the UK government takes steps to realise the value of the NHS's clinical data, the need to overcome the barriers between patients and researchers increases. The University of Leicester's BRISSKit project is addressing these issues with the development of an integrated, open-source software support platform.
