Policies on research data in UK institutions - do you have one to share?

The DCC has recently set up a mechanism to capture and reference examples of institutional research data management policies. We're doing this because we think it's useful to track their existence and because many people have told us that they would find it easier to create policies for their own institution if they could see some working examples. As a national coordination body, it's definitely our role to collate these.

New Guide to UK Research Policy

The Research Information Network just published a new guide which describes the nature, roles and responsibilities of the different Government bodies involved in research policy and funding, and the relationships between them.

It comes with a useful chart showing the links between the key organisations involved.

My attention was drawn this week to the PLANETS White Paper, The Digital Divide - Assessing Organisations’ Preparations for Digital Preservation, which summarises the findings of a Market Survey last year of 200 organisations around the world.

NSF to Ask Every Grant Applicant for Data Management Plan

US funding body the National Science Foundation (NSF) intends to require a 2-page Data Management Plan with all funding applications, according to a news article on Science Insider. The article quotes NSF's Edward Seidel  describing the plans, which will be subject to 'merit review', as phase one of "a broader effort to address the growing interest from U.S. policymakers in making sure that any data obtained with federal funds be accessible to the general public". Any influence on UK funding body polices remains to be seen.

ERIM Project Report Released - Review of the State of the Art of the Digital Curation of Research Data

The report examines models and terminology already in use to describe digital curation, digital repositories, data lifecycles and data processing. It summarizes the guidance provided by research funders, data centres and curation specialists on curating digital data, alongside any requirements they impose. Finally, it provides a brief overview of standards and tools of particular relevance to the ERIM project, and draws lessons from the introduction of a new curation policy at the World Data Center for Climate.

Digital Curation and Preservation Policies in Scottish HEIs

The JISC-funded ERIS project aims to enhance curation and preservation processes within institutions in order to build confidence amongst researchers in the longevity of repositories. As a first step, a survey was undertaken to collect information on the status of digital curation and preservation policies in Scottish HEIs. The survey, which did not identify any preservation policies endorsed at an institutional level, revealed that repositories are still relatively young, and that preservation is not yet amongst their highest priorities.
