IDMP

In recent years, a number of methodologies and related tools have been developed to enable UK HEIs to assess their digital curation and preservation activity including the Data Audit Framework (DAF), Assessing Institutional Digital Assets (AIDA), Digital Repository Audit Method Based on Risk Assessment (DRAMBORA), and most recently the Data Management Plan (DMP) template. AIDA was developed for use at the institutional level while DRAMBORA is aimed more specifically at the digital repository level. DAF and DMP are intended to be used by researchers and research support staff at the project level. At the moment, there is very little that can be employed at the departmental level to help benchmark current data management practice.

The Integrated Data Management Planning (IDMP) Toolkit and Support project aims to address this gap by developing a benchmarking tool for data management and curation strategy development for use at the departmental or research group level. The toolkit will blend key aspects of DAF, AIDA, DRAMBORA, and DMP and will help to:

  • identify researchers data management practice and needs

  • identify and mitigate data management and curation risks

  • highlight areas for improvement

IDMP does not aim to replace the individual toolkits – we firmly believe that each methodology and toolkit is valuable in its own right. IDMP will simply take key aspects of these tools and make them more useful for use at this middle layer of strategic planning. Ultimately, the information gathered by all of the tools will help to ensure that there is greater understanding of researcher requirements and greater cohesion between institutional policies, departmental strategy, and actual research practice.
