SURFSHARE Guidelines on Selection of Research Data

Report on appraising and selecting research data, prepared by Heiko Tjalsma of Netherlands-based DANS and Jeroen Rombouts of Delft Technical University, for the SURF Foundation. This study shows the latest situation in the area of selecting research data, based on a survey of the literature, interviews with important figures, and the experience gained by DANS and the 3TU Data Centre.

Cairo tools survey: a survey of tools applicable to the preparation of digital archives for ingest into a preservation repository

Cairo is a project funded under the 'Tools and Innovation' strand of the JISC's capital programme on Repositories and Preservation. The project will run to the end of March 2008. Cairo will develop a tool for ingesting complex collections of born-digital materials, with basic descriptive, preservation and relationship metadata, into a preservation repository.

Web Curator Tool

The Web Curator Tool (WCT) is a tool for managing the selective web harvesting process. It is designed for use in libraries and other collecting organisations, and supports collection by non-technical users while still allowing complete control of the web harvesting process. The WCT Project is a collaborative effort by the National Library of New Zealand and the British Library, initiated by the International Internet Preservation Consortium.

The sites are classified by academic discipline, some forty subjects from Agriculture to Women's Studies, collected within the four main categories of Arts & Humanities, Bio-Medical, Social Sciences and Science & Technology. The National Archive Institute of Portugal (IAN/TT) doesn't currently have the needed infrastructures to support the processes of ingestion and management of digital objects produced by the public administration (PA). The initiatives of the eGovernment establish the need to support its activity in information and communication technologies to improve the efficiency, productivity and quality of their public services. In this scenario it is clear that the number of digital objects produced by these institutions will grow, and that their legal value and authenticity should be assured.

The Library will work closely with federal partners to assess considerations for shared responsibilities. Federal legislation calls for the Library to work jointly with the Secretary of Commerce, the director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and the National Archives and Records Administration.

IMAPpreserve

Independent Media Arts Preservation, Inc. (IMAP) is a non-profit service, education, and advocacy organization committed to the preservation of non-commercial electronic media. IMAP has grown from a New York-based consortium of arts organizations and individuals to a national resource for preservation training, information, and advocacy. IMAP's core constituents include institutions, organizations, and individuals whose diverse media collections are underserved by existing preservation efforts.

Grainger Engineering Library Information Center - Digital Library Research Projects

A collection of digital library projects under existence at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. These include search tools and resources for digital library development.

VIRLIB - Electronic Document Store (Universities of Antwerp)

The VIRLIB project's focus is on the development of a real delivery service of electronic documents added to Impala, i.e. the Belgian system of managing and transmitting interlibrary requests for loan. In other words, the system VIRLIB II will enable the interlibrary loan department of any scientific library affiliated to the Impala network to deliver directly to the users workpost, in electronic format, any article asked for by the user in question.

INFER - Italian National Forum on Electronic Resources

INFER is a co-ordinating group set up to co-operate in promoting access to electronic information resources in Italian libraries. INFER seeks to further the efficient use of electronic information in libraries and to facilitate access by the public. To this end it encourages libraries to set up consortia and other types of agreement on acquisition and management of electronic resources and access to them. INFER acts as a reference and linkage point and develops initiatives to promote activities and programmes in the area of library electronic resource-sharing.

Maastricht McLuhan Institute

The Maastricht McLuhan Institute (MMI), European Centre for Digital Culture, Knowledge Organisation and Learning Technology, was officially opened by Dr Eric McLuhan in November, 1998 and began its formal activities in January, 1999 at the Grote Gracht 82 in Maastricht. MMI is an initiative of the Universiteit Maastricht, the Hogeschool Maastricht, the Hogeschool Limburg, the Limburgs Universitair Centrum (Diepenbeek), the LIOF Industriebank N.V. and the Province of Limburg. The mission of the Research Unit on Digital Culture is twofold.

ARTISTE Project

ARTISTE is a European Commission supported project that has developed integrated content and metadata-based image retrieval across several major art galleries in Europe. Collaborating galleries include the Louvre in Paris, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and the National Gallery in London. Museums and galleries often have several digital collections ranging from public access images to specialised scientific images used for conservation purposes.

The purpose of this site is to enable the Public Sector, Industry and other interested participants to work together to develop and agree policies and standards for e-government. This is achieved through the UK GovTalk consultation processes. Functionality:  The site is divided broadly into two areas:Schemas and Standards This part of the site covers all aspects relating to the e-Government Interoperability Framework (e-GIF), the e-Government Metadata Standard (e-GMS) and the Government Data Standards Catalogue (GDSC).

INA - Institut National de l'Audiovisuel

The Institut National de l'Audiovisuel is a public organisation with an industrial and commercial role that was set up through the reform of the audiovisual sector conducted in 1974 and implemented on 6 January 1975. INA has the following main missions: 1. Preservation of the national audiovisual heritage, by collecting audiovisual programmes, preserving and restoring the collections, offering up to date and efficient documentary services, and improving access to images and sounds within the Internet environment. 2.

E-DEPOT

In its capacity as National Library of the Netherlands the KB is responsible for the Dutch deposit library. The aim of the deposit library is to collect, catalogue and preserve all publications appearing in the Netherlands. As the number of electronic publications is on the rise, the KB has embraced the important task of preserving and providing long-term access to Dutch electronic publications. It has developed a digital information archiving system which is the technical heart of the 'e-Depot' project. It is primarily intended for archiving publications by Dutch publishers.

e-Science Programme

e-Science is a Cross Research Council, RCUK initiative. The programme has quickly demonstrated the utility of e-Science across disciplines in areas ranging from chemistry and biology to astronomy, atmospheric physics, engineering design, materials science and health and medicine. Scientists are engaging with each other in multidisciplinary teams to develop new Grid middleware across many pioneering projects and applications.

Australian Partnership for Sustainable Resources

The APSR project will establish a centre of excellence for the management of digital collections. It has an overall focus on the critical issues of the access continuity and the sustainability of digital collections. It will encourage the development of skills and expertise and will actively provide international linkages and national services.

ICOM - The International Council of Museums

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) is an international organisation of museums and museum professionals which is committed to the conservation, continuation and communication to society of the world's natural and cultural heritage, present and future, tangible and intangible. Created in 1946, ICOM is a non-governmental organisation maintaining formal relations with UNESCO and having a consultative status with the United Nations' Economic and Social Council.

ICA (International Council on Archives)

The International Council on Archives (ICA) is dedicated to the advancement of archives worldwide. In pursuing the advancement of archives, ICA works for the protection and enhancement of the memory of the world. ICA is the professional organisation for the world archival community, dedicated to promoting the preservation, development, and use of the world's archival heritage. It brings together national archive administrations, professional associations of archivists, regional and local archives and archives of other organisations as well as individual archivists.

PRESTO - Preservation Technologies for European Archives

PRESTO aims to develop state of the art technology in the preservation of film, video and audio media. The principle partners reflect the largest archives in Europe: BBC (UK), INA (FRANCE) and RAI (ITALY). Information has been collected from other major European archives. Although not focused on digital preservation specifically (it is primarily concerned with the preservation of analog material), PRESTO addresses questions that are relevant to the issue.

Netherlands Institute for Scientific Information Services

NIWI aims at providing scientific information on the influence of digital networks and on the practice of science in multiple fields. In the domain of research on the Dutch language and culture, the institute encourages the use and the availability of digital information, digitalisation projects, data archives and bibliographical databanks. NIWI is the library for the KNAW, and consists of a large collection biomedical journals and a historical collection. NIWI provides information about research and researchers in The Netherlands, in all scientific fields.
