The SHERPA-DP project, funded by the JISC and led by the AHDS, aims to advance research through a study of the practical implementation of previous recommendations about the provision of preservation services to academic institutional repositories using a distributed model, but one that is OAIS compliant. By extending collaboration between repositories and specialist service providers into a full preservation service Sherpa DP aims to remove from each individual institutional repository the burden of adding a preservation layer to their repository services, and the need for them to seek to employ scarce preservation management skills and expertise. The project will investigate the business case for this model and seek to establish an economic cost model that could be used to ensure its long-term sustainability.
