WebCite

WebCite® is a project initiated by the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation at the University of Toronto intended to digitally archive web material (web pages, PDF documents, and so on) which are cited in scholarly articles. The idea of WebCite is that authors of scholarly papers (as well as editors and publishers of scholarly work) are increasingly citing digital material which is in the public domain on the web, yet which is at risk to disappear, i.e. is almost certainly no longer available in 5, 10, or 20 years time.
Functionality:
WebCite automatically archives cited web pages or other cited online material (PDFs, reports, and so on) which are referenced in scholarly articles. These cited web pages are presumably particularly important and relevant, worth digitally archiving for mankind, as they are cited in scholarly journals and books; on the other hand, digital archiving raises novel issues in terms of intellectual property which will be addressed creating a license management system.
Level of Expertise:
No expertise required for (citing) authors, readers, or cited authors. Some XML expertise required for publishers.
