Objectives
The IEC is a global standardisation organisation, which promotes international cooperation on conformity, for electrical, electronic and related technologies. Its objectives are to:
- meet the requirements of the global market efficiently
- ensure primacy and maximum world-wide use of its standards and conformity assessment systems
- assess and improve the quality of products and services covered by its standards
- establish the conditions for the interoperability of complex systems
- increase the efficiency of industrial processes
- contribute to the improvement of human health and safety
- contribute to the protection of the environment.

Areas of Activity
The IEC develops standards and conformity assessment procedures. It advocates for the implementation of their standards through a marketing strategy which includes: publications, information centres, awards and meetings.
Membership
Membership of the IEC is through national standards committees which represent electrotechnical interests. Nations make their own decisions concerning how to constitute their committee. Committees can have full or associate membership. The IEC also operates an Affiliate Country Programme which enables countries, who might otherwise be financially excluded, to participate.
