Skills frameworks

Many stakeholders are involved in effective data management and longer term curation. Researchers, information scientists, information technologists and repository managers - to name a few - each have their own roles to play in the data curation lifecycle and each needs a specific skill-set to fulfil their roles.

There have been numerous initiatives working to define the skill-sets required by the different stakeholders in recent years such as DigCCurr and Digital Curator Vocational Education Europe (DigCurV).

In the UK, the Research Information Network (RIN), DCC, UK Data Archive (UKDA) and the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) have taken leading roles in identifying and promoting data management skills amongst researchers. JISC and RIN co-funded the Research Data Management Skills Support Initiative (DaMSSI) which was led by DCC. DaMSSI aimed to facilitate the use of tools like Vitae's Researcher Development Framework (RDF) and the Seven Pillars of Information Literacy model developed by the Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL) to help researchers - and their employers - to effectively plan training and professional development in the area of data management.

Working with JISC’s Research data management training materials (RDMTrain) projects, DaMSSI undertook analysis and provided guidance and support that drew from the experiences of these projects. DaMSSI, which was overseen by the RIN Working Group on Information Handling, ran from November 2010 to August 2011. Links to the project outputs and related resources are provided below.
