DCC Digital Curation 101 Workshop
10-12 March 2009
London
In recent years there have been a number of useful training events devoted to raising awareness about the curation and preservation of digital information. However, there is a still a need to provide practical hands-on training in conceptualising, creating, preserving access to and re-using data over time. Our Digital Curation 101 workshop will contribute towards bridging the gap that currently exists between this general awareness of preservation and curation issues and the ability to practically address them in a real working environment.

DCC/DPE Forum: Developing an International Framework for Audit and Certification
29 November 2007
Campus Adlershof, Humboldt University Berlin, Germany
Evidence-based evaluation has been used successfully for many years to
establish trust in traditional repositories such as museums and archives. It is, however, a mistake to assume that the trust earned by a repository that successfully manages and preserves analogue material can be transferred to their digital holdings. Such cavalier assumptions pose a substantial threat to the long-term accessibility and reusability of our collective memory and scholarship. Recent international activity has championed the need for
evidence-based evaluation of digital repositories. However, the work to date has focussed largely on the development of a criteria checklist and on the audit itself. Considerably less thought has been committed to the shape of the overall certification framework that by necessity must surround it. This seminar brought together repository practitioners, professional auditors, representatives from international funding bodies, and members of the research community to determine the feasibility of digital repository certification on an international scale.

Joint DCC/PLANETS/CASPAR/DPE Joint Workshop: Developing an International Curation and Preservation Training Roadmap
29-30 March 2007
Nice, France
The number of projects and institutions providing training on digital preservation has increased dramatically in recent years, resulting in a vast and often overwhelming number of courses for potential attendees to choose from. As UK and EU projects such as DCC, DPE, CASPAR and PLANETS begin to finalise their own overall training plans, it is clear that increased collaboration is needed in order to establish a more co-ordinated approach. In order to try and address the issue, this meeting was initiated by members of DPE, PLANETS, CASPAR and DCC to discuss how projects might best work together to establish a shared roadmap for digital preservation and curation training. Attendance was encouraged from as many key initiatives and projects as possible, to ensure a high level of discussion and productivity.

Data Curation Mini-Workshop at UK e-Science All Hands Meeting (AHM2006)
18-21 September 2006
East Midlands Conference Centre, Nottingham
In a joint initiative with the JISC-funded eBank UK and SPECTRa projects, we delivered a workshop that: described the current "state-of-play" in digital curation best practice; used Chemistry as a discipline to illustrate a pro-active approach to data curation, where access, discovery, use, re-use and preservation of the data is fundamental to the advancement of the science; drew on the experience of other disciplines to illustrate user requirements, issues and barriers to implementation of curation methodologies; and identified priority areas for further work to promote data curation amongst the wider community. The workshop began with invited speakers from the discipline of chemistry presenting their experience of curation and exploring the requirements of assuring long-term access to data to support interdisciplinary science. This domain exemplar was complemented by a call for contributions from other disciplines to illustrate their approaches to curation, the common challenges and discipline variation. There was also a moderated discussion session. The outcomes of the workshop will be summarised in a Position Paper, and the individual papers may be published in our electronic journal: the International Journal of Digital Curation.

Metadata can play a vital role in enabling the effective management, discovery, and re-usability of digital information. Preservation metadata provides provenance information, documents preservation activity, identifies technical features, and aids in verifying the authenticity of a digital object. The PREMIS Working Group released its Data Dictionary for Preservation metadata in June 2005 (Data Dictionary for Preservation metadata [external, PDF, 3.3MB]). This is a core set of metadata elements recommended for use in all preservation repositories regardless of the type of materials archived and the preservation strategies employed.
