In conjunction with the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC), we held a two-day workshop that explored the range of policies required to manage, preserve, and reuse the information held within digital repositories over time. This event was organized in cooperation with the Oxford Internet Institute (OII).

Developing and implementing a range of policies is vital for enabling the effective management, discovery, and re-usability of information held within digital repositories. This workshop provided concrete examples of the range and nature of the policies required and shared real-life experiences in developing, implementing, and evaluating these policies through a series of case studies and panel discussions.

This workshop was of benefit to individuals and institutions interested in developing, implementing, or evaluating policies to manage, preserve, and reuse digital information held within digital repositories over time.

Format

This event was split over three sessions:

• The first session examined the development of curation and preservation policies.
• The second session examined the implementation of these curation and preservation policies.
• The third session explored the evaluation and review of these curation and preservation policies. This session comprised representatives from funding bodies and curation practitioners who discussed how both can best work together to influence and integrate the various policies that may influence data over its life-cycle. Each representative had five minutes to share their views and then an open forum followed that allowed participants to question the speakers and to discuss some of the workshop themes in more detail.

In each of the sessions, speakers were asked to identify roles and responsibilities involved in the development, implementation or evaluation of policies, relationships with other institutional policies and processes, workflow issues, key policy themes, and to highlight any difficulties encountered.
