Grant Funding Call 07/09: Data Management Infrastructure

Projects to identify requirements for, and then build, infrastructure for effective data management within or across HEIs. Funding of up to £250,000 per pilot project is available. The JISC will fund 6-8 projects in total. Funding is available for projects starting from October 2009 for 18 months. All projects must complete by 31 March 2011. The deadline for proposals is 12 noon on Thursday 6 August 2009.

EPrints working with Sun's Cloud Storage Service

As part of Sun Microsystem's Preservation Archiving Special Interest Group (PASIG), the EPrints team have been collaborating with Sun to enable EPrints to be used with archival storage products, such as the Honeycomb (STK-5800). This collaboration has informed the development of the new EPrints 3.2 Storage Controller that enables the repository to distribute its objects between many storage platforms according to the rules laid down in an XML policy language.

Five-Dimensional DVD Could Store 1.6 Terabytes

Researchers at the Swinburne University of Technology, in Hawthorn, Australia, have found a way to add more dimensions to optical disc recording. They use multiple wavelengths and polarizations of light to record data on multi-layered discs. The technique could pack 1.6 terabytes of data on a standard-size DVD, the researchers say.
