Five-Dimensional DVD Could Store 1.6 Terabytes

Researchers at the Swinburne University of Technology, in Hawthorn, Australia, have found a way to add more dimensions to optical disc recording. They use multiple wavelengths and polarizations of light to record data on multi-layered discs. The technique could pack 1.6 terabytes of data on a standard-size DVD, the researchers say.

The Closing the Digital Curation Gap (CDCG) collaboration united those at the cutting edge of digital curation research, development, teaching and training with the aim of creating good practice guides covering all aspects of data curation.
