October 2006 Edition of NeSC News Now Available

The October edition (issue 44) of NeSC News, an online newsletter from the National e-Science Centre [external] that summarises the latest news and activities of the centre, is now available. New Bibliographic e-Resource Hailed by Librarians and Publishers

The Academic Database Assessment Tool, a major new resource giving librarians access to a wealth of information on key academic resources, has recently been launched. This free resource, developed by JISC Collections in association with Nick Andrews Consultancy, provides quick and easy comparisons of the major bibliographic and citation databases currently in use by the academic community, including Web of Science, Scopus, ABI Inform, British Humanities Index and many more.

Call for Participation for Upcoming Revision of PREMIS Data Dictionary

Since the PREMIS [external] Data Dictionary for Preservation Metadata 1.0 was released in May 2005, it has undergone considerable study and discussion within the digital preservation community. Now, nearly 18 months later, sufficient feedback has been accumulated to warrant undertaking its first revision, to version 2.0. DCC Externally Moderated Reflective Self-Evaluation: Report

We recently undertook an externally moderated reflective self-evaluation to gather evidence of the extent to which we are meeting our objectives. The evaluation used a number of different methods to gather data from a variety of users, potential users and others with an interest in digital curation. Evaluation activity included a detailed DCC staff survey, focus groups, interviews and a public survey.

Five Year Review of the OAIS Reference Model

The "Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System (OAIS)" standard was approved as CCSDS 650.0-B-1 in January 2002 and was approved as ISO standard 14721 in 2003. In accordance with normal procedure, the first five-year review of the standard is now underway. Submit any comments by 30 October 2006 to OAIS-support@delight.gsfc.nasa.go.
