This is the fourth in a series of workshops held jointly by the DCC and a regional e-Science centre (the Imperial College Internet Centre in this case) for the exchange of practitioner experience and sharing advice on data curation.

Legal Environment of Digital Curation

This one-day workshop provided a useful overview of legal considerations for non-legal professionals who work with data. The day comprised talks by experts in the following areas: Intellectual property rights and licensing Data protection, freedom of information and privacy Data as evidence These talks were followed by group discussion on each of these areas in the afternoon.

DCC Guest Lecture: Appraisal of Data as a Precursor to Digital Curation

John Faundeen, Archivist, U.S. Geological Survey, Center for Earth Resources Observation and Science, talked about the reasons for appraising data as well as reviewing processes developed for scientific records by the U.S. Geological Survey Center for Earth Resources Observation and Science.
