IR format profiles: Preserv interview
Cluster members may be interested in this recent article. The Preserv
project, which is investigating the preservation of content held in IRs, is
featured in the latest interview in a series produced by the Digital
Preservation Coalition (DPC)
http://www.dpconline.org/graphics/join/preserv.html
This candid interview might be useful as a starting point for those
unfamiliar with the project or for those who prefer less technical
descriptions.
In terms of outcomes from the project, the most significant reported here
is the PRONOM/ROAR profiles. To make decisions about what to preserve, any
IR first needs a detailed assessment of the type of content, and the range
of formats, it holds. Combining the PRONOM file format identification
service of the UK National Archives with the well-known Registry of Open
Access Archives, Preserv has produced format profiles for over 200, and
growing, OAI-compliant repositories.
To find out if your IR is profiled, and to find out more about this
service, see the interview.
