Joy Davidson | 18 April 2006

Publicly Available Specification (PAS) 78 guidelines on how to make websites more user-friendly for disabled people, were recently launched. PAS 78 is a good practice guide particularly aimed at the people responsible for commissioning and maintaining public-facing sites. To help the sector NEMLAC are introducing, as part of their Supplier Training Scheme (STS), a training course for North East suppliers wishing to work with the cultural sector as part of the Virtual Digitisation Centre project. The course sets out to give the latest guidance on web site accessibility from the leading organisation in this field -AbilityNet.

The NEMLAC 'Web Site Accessibility' course is delivered by Jon Gooday from AbilityNet who was part of the panel developing PAS 78. AbilityNet have worked with numerous significant organisations from the BBC, BAA, Microsoft, Cadbury-Schweppes through to the e-Envoy at the cabinet office.

The NEMLAC course has two statuses 'Pending'and 'Awarded'.
'Pending' for those suppliers who have attended a training courses but not submitted course work to verify their ability to comply and 'Awarded' for those that have submitted and achieved the desired standard - submissions are moderated by AbilityNet. As a result a supplier with an 'Awarded' status will have shown real commitment to the sector and be clued up on all the latest accessibility issues.
