Shaping the UK's Skill4EOSC Competence Centre

DCC is one of the key partners in the Horizon Europe project, Skills4EOSC. Skills4EOSC’s core objective is to advance Open Science (OS) skills by unifying the current training landscape into a common and trusted pan-European ecosystem. The project’s overarching objective is pursued through the coordination of established national and regional activities. A key channel to reach this objective is via national Competence Centres, which is seen as the cornerstone of a sustainable strategy towards normalising OS skills.

As the UK partner in Skills4EOSC, the DCC will be working with national level institutions in the UK to formulate plans to develop a UK-based competence centre. Competence Centres are seen as centres of gravity of Open Science and other EOSC activities in their countries. The UK Competence Centre will serve as a point of reference for finding training programmes and materials, best practices, and tools for managing, reusing, sharing and analysing FAIR data and other digital research objects.

The UK Competence Centre will be a part of the Skills4EOSC Competence Centres Network, which is a coordinated network of Competence Centres developed across Europe that provides key competencies to enable the practice of Open Science.

UK Competence Centre Event

On 20 September 2024, we will take the first steps toward structuring the UK competence centre. Stakeholders and representatives from various institutions and thematic communities are invited to frame the coordination of Open Science training, resources, and materials for the UK. We have a unique opportunity to shape how Open Science will be practiced in the UK. Other competence centres are already established national initiatives with many pre-defined goals. We are able to shape the network that will be most beneficial to UK researchers and those who support researchers.
