Representation information registries promise to make life much easier for those trying to interpret unfamiliar digital files. In this briefing paper, Alex Ball of UKOLN looks at a selection of existing file format and XML schema registries, as well as some of the more advanced registries currently being developed. This paper is one of a number of state-of-the-art reviews being written for the KIM Grand Challenge Project.
