Because good research needs good data

Selection of scientific films for Education Media Online

Joy Davidson | 07 July 2006

Dear Colleagues,

The Education Media Online service (www.emol.ac.uk) (soon to be re-launched as Film and Sound Online) includes a number of films from content owners IWF Knowledge and Media GmbH (http://www.iwf.de/Navigation_en/index.jsp). Based in Germany, the IWF is one of the leading science film institutes in the world. It has been working since the late 1940s on behalf of academic researchers to create audio-visual recordings of physical phenomena in nature and technology, the biological sciences, and ethnographic customs and processes in culture and society.

The IWF collection is of interest to students of biomedical science and life sciences, zoology, botany, anthropology, chemistry, environmental science, genetics, oceanography, chemistry, physics, physical sciences, mathematics, ethnography and geology. An introduction by Michael Niehaus to the IWF collection for Media Online Focus is available at: http://www.bufvc.ac.uk/publications/mediaonlineissues/mof13_vf52.pdf

As part of the original contract with IWF, JISC is able to select further films from IWF and it is important that the selection supports the needs of research, teaching and learning in the UK.

This selection process will be carried out shortly and JISC Collections would like to invite you to participate in this selection process. The IWF will be providing JISC with a list of films on offer which will in turn be provided to those who wish to participate. JISC recommends that some time is taken to look on the IWF site and view previews of the films on this list.

An online form will then be available where participants can rank the films according to their relevance for teaching, learning and research.

If you or your colleagues would be interested in participating, please inform JISC Collections.

Thank you in advance for your assistance, if you have any further questions please let me know.
