NOAA's National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) provides scientific stewardship, products, and services for geophysical data describing the solid earth, marine, and solar-terrestrial environment, as well as earth observations from space.

NGDC works closely with contributors of scientific data to prepare documented, reliable data sets. NGDC's data holdings currently contain more than 500 digital and analog databases, some of which are very large. NGCD participates in cooperative projects and encourages data exchange with other government agencies, nonprofit
organizations, and universities. The Data Center continually develops data management programs that reflect the changing world of geophysics.

Technical Information Specialist, ZA-1412-II, LM-GG (DEU)

MAJOR DUTIES:
As the Technical Information Specialist (Physical Science) with the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), you will manage the product catalog for NGDC, provide customer and data provider support, engage in data management activities related to all of the data center's onsite and offsite holdings, and perform outreach activities.

You will provide a lead administrative and customer service support role for standard and custom products produced at NGDC. You will act as product catalog administrator and liaison with system administrators who manage the online store. You will account for all
transactions, provide accounting reports, respond to customer inquiries regarding product information, and offer support to data managers involved in product distribution. You will maintain the storeroom and product inventory and oversee mailing logistics and facilitate printing requests. You will analyze user statistics for both Web and Online Products and report trends.

You will manage and provide oversight of storage activities and inventory efforts currently used to account for products and data sets stored in both onsite and offsite locations. You will ensure inventories are entered and updated into a centralized database,
establish a cyclical physical inventory process and implement a bar code system, engage data managers and other expert support to review and assess dispositions, monitor environmental conditions of storage rooms and storage maintenance services, and migrate inventories of different formats into a common database system.

You will conduct Outreach activities at local and national venues including Earth Day, Science Festivals, Regional Science Teachers Conferences, and interactive presentations for 8th graders' science day at the Boulder campus. Your duties may include oversight of display monitors for self-guided tours, coordination of VIP visits, preparation of educational brochures and informational CDs for
conferences and general use, working with other labs on cooperative projects, coordination of booth/equipment arrangements for
conferences, etc.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION:

Your experience must have demonstrated the ability to perform, supervise, or direct one or more of the functional areas of work covered by this series; to understand the concepts, theories, new developments, and co-relationship of information in related fields;
and to maintain up-to-date information on the state of the art.

To be creditable as Specialized experience, your Federal or non-
Federal experience must be equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade
level in areas such as the following:

(1) Experience presenting technical or scientific information to diverse, non-technical lay audiences (general public).

(2) Experience demonstrating customer service skills (researching and responding to customer inquiries, requests or complaints, and resolving problems and delivering solutions).

(3) Experience demonstrating knowledge or skill in Information Technology and database management skills and products used to manage or track products, data or services. This may include use of
application(s) utilizing an underlying database.

(3) Experience demonstrating skill in compilation, analysis or synthesis of data or statistics for preparation of reports or briefings on status, outcomes, or trends for senior management.

(4) Experience which demonstrates the ability to communicate specialized information both orally and in writing with colleagues or external contacts, senior employees or management, and the
general public.

(5) Experience demonstrating knowledge of or participation in a physical inventory process or data/product storage activities.
