Following on from our Research Data Management Forum: Inaugural Workshop on 19-20 March 2008, the DCC - in partnership with the Research Information Network - held the second workshop on the roles and responsibilities for effective data management at Chancellors Conference Centre, Manchester. The themes explored at this workshop included:
The purpose of the workshop was to consider how best to meet the challenge of managing research data in UK Universities. Participants were informed of progress made under the JISC MRD Programme to examine researchers’ data management requirements and improve planning in a number of academic and institutional contexts. The objective was to discuss the detail of the projects’ discoveries and to consider the more general landscape and initiatives required.
This event raised awareness of digital curation issues and highlighted the latest results of the DCC's work. Key digital curation issues were introduced alongside best practice advice for providing long-term access to digital resources. Vital to the long-term access to digital resources is continued research and development of tools and services that the DCC undertakes — information about this work was provided. Projects local to Exeter was also discussed, allowing challenges and solutions to be shared.
This event investigated the challenges of digital curation faced by multimedia and scientific research projects. The varied presentations encouraged challenges and solutions to be shared across disciplines. Attendees not only gained greater knowledge of the different tools and resources available through the DCC, they also benefited from contact with others locally and nationally involved with digital curation.
This event allowed those working with digital data at UCL to share experiences. The range of disciplines present provided an opportunity for collaboration on digital curation challenges. Understanding and working together between disciplines is critical if we are to successfully curate digital data over the long-term. Participants had an opportunity to provide feedback and discuss their digital preservation plans.
